More Information About 6061 Aluminum Plate

The following data about aluminum 6061 plate can help you determine if this alloy is best for your application.

The 6061 aluminum plate offers several benefits, such as:

  • Machinability
  • Strength
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Weldability
  • The ability to be anodized

Its disadvantages are:

  • No bendability
  • Poor formability

Aluminum plate 6061 is common in the transportation industry for:

  • Shipbuilding
  • Aerospace
  • Heavy trucks
  • Automotive

Its specific applications include:

  • Valves
  • Structural framing
  • Marine shapes
  • Couplings
  • Base plates
  • Automotive shapes
  • Aircraft

T6-tempered 6061 aluminum plate has good machinability. In the annealed condition, this alloy is not easily machinable.

Aluminum 6061 plate is heat treatable at 990 degrees Fahrenheit. The workpiece will require time to be evenly and thoroughly heated. The alloy is then quenched in water after treatment.

The 6061 aluminum alloy can also take precipitation hardening at 320 degrees for 18 hours. After this hardening, the alloy is air-cooled, heated to 350 degrees and air-cooled again.

Aluminum plate 6061 has excellent weldability. Thin sections work best with gas tungsten arc welding, and gas metal arc welding is the recommended approach for heavier sections.
